Here is a link for LCD screens for a desktop. I bought a monochrome one for an MP3 jukebox project I was working on.
They have color but they get a little more expensive. I don't know what your price range was but it would be a lot easier than trying to get the laptop screen to connect to your desktop.
If you are going to get a laptop anyway you might be able to find an old 166 with screen that works for cheap and use the whole thing.
