OK, one more thought...
Since some front-end authors provide the source (ArcadeOS for ex.), cabinet owners with a bit of programming experience, a scan of their own layouts and the currently ficticious MAME data as described earlier, could compile their own, unique, versions of the frontend to use the aforementioned data with the scan to show on screen exactly the controls necessary...
... hey... I didn't say it's easy! But it IS better than having 100 of those little HAPPS control blanks attached to buttons!
