I wrestle with this one myself. I know how to play most the games but my kids and friends don't. I would really like to see an electronic solution as opposed to paper. I had been extracting info from KLOV.com into 1 page with screen shots and printing it in color and putting it in a binder, but my kids really didn't look at it so I stopped.

I did great *.png files that label the controls used for a particular game and gray out those not used. Using ArcadeOS I have the game screen shot load if you highlight a game. Then if you run the game the picture of the controls displays for about 5 seconds before the game starts. I also have the control picture show if you press Info in ArcadeOS, but other than me I have never seen any of my friends or kids press Game Info.

What I would like and am holding out for is the ability to use ArcadeOS somehow to display the game instructions. Heck, as I write this, I am thinking I may offer to compile a file similar to history.dat called instruct.dat that could be used either by MAME or front ends. I'll make a new post to see what folks think.

: Okay a buddy and I are re-doing the arcade cabinet that I have
: and we came across an idea. Each game is different,
: and each game has different buttons that do different things
: but what if we made a 3 by 5 card with all the information about
: the game....example

: --------------------------------------------------------------------
: |Name:Raiden |
: |Clones:Raiden(Alternate Hardware, Raiden(Korea) |
: |Year:1990 Genre:Shooter Players:2(alternating) |
: |Manufacturer:Seibu Kahatsu Input:2 Joysticks 2 buttons each |
: |Instructions:Guide your ship, and fire at opposing ships, gain |
: |powerups along the way (blah blah) |
: |button 1:Fire shot button 2:fire bomb |
: |Game ranking:9 If you like this game try out: |
: | tiger heli, truxton, truxton II |
: |known bugs:music is inconsistent sometimes |
: ---------------------------------------------------------------------

: we would all help make these cards for each and every game, each of these
: 3 x 5 inch cards could be stored in a roledex of sorts, near or on your
: cabinet, so that if someone came up to your arcade cabinet, you could flip
: to one of the cards, and know instantly how to play the game....
: or if you wanted to learn how to play a new game.
: this could be a word or wordperfect template, and eventually we would have
: all the MAME games, (until a new one comes out)

: I would love to hear feedback, and I guess if no one else would be intrested
: to help then I'll just do it for my arcade cabinet slowly, but I think we could
: all benefit here! Oh if you steal my idea, I don't care, just type up all those
: cards and let everyone use them, (a special thanks woud be nice!)

:
: thanx for your time......

: Long live MAME!
