Is joystick calibration required with non Joystick games?

Typically, other than initial game set-up, I would only use the TAB and ENTER keys in MAME to calibrate the (analog, gameport) joystick.

I was playing a Windows game last night that needed keyboard input and could only get the game to allow me to select an option by calibrating the joystick in Windows. In the past, I have had problems with player control in BattleZone, Super Space Invaders '91, and Hot Chase, which were corrected by calibrating the joystick even though I do not use the joystick for these games.

Once I build my arcade control panel, I will not need the analog joystick for MAME, but will probably still leave it connected for Windows flight games, etc.

If I select Joystick = none in MAME, would a connected out-of-calibration joystick still affect gameplay?

For driving games, I was planning to have the analog joystick connected as joystick 1 and some pedals connected as joystick 2 and use the joystick = dual command and map the inputs to joystick 2. In this situation, would I need to also calibrate joystick 1, before playing the games?

I am trying to decide which games will require access to the Tab and Enter functions in MAME to decide what buttons to add on my Arcade joystick.

Thanks in advance for the assistance.
