Hey SJ,

Here's the "exploded view" of the Happ Super. You can also find this at http://www.happcontrols.com/amusement/joysticks/super_joy_e.htm .

In the picture, see where the actual stick itself is - it has five other little pieces that line up right underneath it? The actuator is the second piece from the bottom (right above the little C-clip) - it's kind of "hourglass shaped".

If the wider end of the actuator is facing up the stick is in 8-way mode, and if the thinner end is facing up, it's in 4-way mode. Think of it this way (and it makes a lot more sense once you have one in front of you) : If the end of the actuator that is actually hitting the microswtich levers is the wider end, the still will be 8-way because it will be easier for you to hit two swtiches at once when you move the stick diagonally. Conversely, if the thinner end is the end that hits the swtiches it is very hard to hit two switches at once, hence it being in 4-way mode.

And now, a JP4 moment of stupidity:
When I was wiring up my joysticks for the Arcade Paradise cab a year ago (my god, has it been that long??), I obviously had the control panel upside down so that I could wire everything up, so what was "up" at the time was really "down". Imagine my delight when the DAMN THINGS WOULDN'T GO DIAGONAL. Ah well...
