Thanks for the good comments LaserRot and Tom61. I think it's time for me to buy a multimeter and check the powersupply first since that's fairly easy to do. Then I guess, I'll need to get up enough courage and read about how to discharge the flyback transformer (I think that's what it's called) so that I can disconnect the pcb and look at it more closely.
