I have a CP with 2 joysticks and 5 buttons per player. Your idea is really simple, why didn't I think of that??

I'll just remap my buttons so that it is more like the orig Asteroids and Space Invaders, etc....I can't wait to get home.

: I play asteroids with my joystick for rotate left and right and buttons 1, 2 and 3 for fire, thrust and hyperspace. This is OK but it just doesn't have the same feel, I am off to the left of the screen and using a joystick instead of buttons. I don't know why I didn't think of this before but I can map player 1 button 2 and 3 for rotate left and right, and player 2 buttons 3, 2 and 1 for fire, thrust and hyperspace. I'm so excited I can't wait to go home and try it!

: Only problem is if I do stuff like this on several games other people may not know which controls to use for which games. So I came up with this idea. create control panel layout pictures and have ArcadeOS display them when you run the game. Right now I have a screen shot display when you select the game and the same screenshot display when you run the game. I can just create several control panel pictures, graying out the controls not used and putting labels on the ones used. I can use standard labels so that one image will work for more than one game.

: For example Burger Time and Donky Kong function the same but button 1 is "pepper" in Burger Time and "jump" in Donky Kong. I can create one picture and label button 1 as "Action". I'll give it a shot and let y'all know how it works.
