Gamepad HAck - Some games slow way down

Since doing my gamepad hack, I've found that a number of games in Mame slow waaay down when the joystick is enabled (e.g. Xain'd Sleena, Metal Slug, Defender and others).

I'm going to order an IPAC anyway as soon as Andy gets back from holiday, but until then, does anybody know what might be causing the slow-down and whether there's a simple fix?
