It sounds like what you are doing is making an "all-in-one" control panel which is causing you space issues.
While all of the ideas are really great (Tom61's was very inventive!), the simple solution is to have a couple of control panels. It is a far better solution to have 3 GREAT panels than to have one so-so all-in-one panel.
Follow the lead of others who put their efforts into making sure their panels would be interchangeable - Use connectors for the wiring, and make it easy to take off and put on. I currently have 3 panels (1=2 joy, 6 buttons/player, 1= Tron Joystick & spinner, 1= Spinner + 4 buttons) which take under 1 minute to change - and you can change it on the fly.
That is just my 2 cents worth......
