Here is another thing you may not have though of... While playing furriously with the spinner... it may pop down when you do not want it to!
A good way to do what you want may be to make the male shaft a little bit under the panels edge... and a removable knob that has a long female connecting shaft. The knob would have to have a 'D' like shape to prevent slippage from left to right turning. This would allow for removable steering wheels as well.

PS - The hard part will be making the knob... but really... it is very 'do-able'
