I used 5/8" MDF for my control panel, and it worked fine. Even managed to kerf the edges on my table saw to accept the 3/4" T-molding. I also added some black marble finish formica to the top, rather than using the Lexan or Plexiglass top over contact paper for coloring. Seems to be working ok. Even with the 5/8", I was concerned about screwing the joysticks in with wood screws, so I used through-hole bolts also, just for added stability. : I used 6mm MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) for my controller and it proved to be excellent (thin and very strong).

: The only down-side is that you can't really screw into it, so the joystick had to be bolted in (better technique anyway IMO) and the case had to be put together using wooden blocks in the corners to screw into.

: For some reason I haven't read of anyone else using this material, it seems ideal to me.
