Can I split a USB cable for 2 devices?

Or is this plain crazy? Do I necessarily need a HUB for this? This would tremendously affect my project's budget :(

As a simple example, I'd liek to have a keyboard and a mouse, connected to a single wire, into a USB port. Kind of like a "Y" adaptor. (splitter)
