8 way joyticks indeed have only 4 inputs (map to 4 keys) and the diagonal movements are recognized by the joystick as combination of 2 keys.
4 ways also have 4 imputs, but do not recognize the "diagonal" input as a combination of 2 keys. No connection is made on these positions.
BTW, keep in mind that each one of the 4 inputs has 2 connectors (8 total) because one always goes to ground. Not to be confused with 8 inputs!
