3Ghz? Big deal, they'll cost peanuts in a couple years. :) (more)

Besides, doing 3D acceleration would be effectively replacing the games' internal 3d display hardware with modern hardware. What you end up with is a port, not an emulation if you want to be a stickler about it (and MAMEDEV is thankfully).
I prefer to wait and have it all done in software, even if it means my favorite games run slow right now.

: Don't forget.. if you read the disclaimer that comes with MAME, it states that MAME was created solely to document and emulate the inner workings of arcade games. the fact that in order to do this, the games become playable, is a nice side effect.

: The whole point is to emulate all of the hardware inside the game, not to make it playable at the current computers speeds.. so seeing 3d hardware support to replace emulation of the games' GPUs is not likely, at least in an official release by the mame team... however... it's open source... so ya never know who'll come out with MAME3D :)

: : Once they really get into the polygon games, they will have to use Direct 3D or some other hardware support or the system reqs will be too great. Either that, or we will have to wait until we all have 3 Ghz PC's to play the likes of Virua Racing!

: : : : STUN Runner and Hard Drivin' preliminary drivers are in!
: : : : Aaron Giles got the polygons to display properly. :)

: : : Certainly a great effort, however they report approximately half speed emulation on a PIII/933.
: : : This has dashed my hopes of a playable Virtua Racing emulator anytime soon :(
