if you are still having problems finding the common ground(can't trace it) simply test it with a piece of wire. if you are hacking a pc gamepad open start->settings->control panel->Game Controllers. add what type of joystick you have and then click properties and select the test tab. now when you connect the two copper pads for a button, one of the button lights on the test utility should light up, for instance button 1. now simply keep one end of the wire on one of those pads and touch any of the other pads. if a different button light turns on for instance 2, then you found the ground. if it is button 1 that turns on again then you have found the ground. if nothing happens then try the other pad. this sounds more complex than it should but it is really easy. good luck.

: If you are hacking a joypad (such as a normal computer gamepage/psx gamepad/dreamcast gamepad)... Each button has 2 copper connections... How do you figure out which copper connection is for the ground and for the button press? My controller does not label it so I am at a loss as to which copper connection will be my common ground.
